The Fort (CST) Photo & Food Walk- Part 1

You probably must have read my last blog on the Bandra photowalk wherein I explored the gorgeous area of Bandstand & Castella de Aguada. This time I did my first photo & food walk.

My journey started at 5.45 in the morning. The early morning train travel made me nostalgic. It reminded me of undergrad days when I would travel early morning to South Bombay, the train naps and exam preps in the train. I realized how much I missed the train rides. Finally, I reached Churchgate at 7.15. As I stepped out the first thought that came to my mind is that there is something so different about South Bombay perhaps it was because of the air or maybe the heritage buildings.  It takes you to a different era.

My taxi ride to CST was fun, especially the little chat that I had with the Sardar uncle who drove the taxi. As I stepped out of the cab I got to witness the light game played by the sun on the CST heritage building. The sight was breathtaking. Words cannot do justice to the scenic beauty.

Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus

The entire troop assembled at CST and thus began our Food and Photo Walk…

Stop 1 on our Food and Photo Walk- Cannon pav bhaji.

cannon
Amul Pav Bhaji

Located bang opposite the Cst station, this place starts serving pav bhaji from 7 am that too in large quantities and there are several batches of it prepared simultaneously. The pav bhaji they serve looks very tempting but somehow it was a huge disappointment in terms of taste. It had a slight off taste and the onion served with the Pav bhaji was stale too.

At 80 Rs per plate, the quantity served was good but the quality wasn’t. Apart from pav bhaji they also serve regular poha, gulab jamun, and drinks like lassi, chaas, and Aam Panna.

After having the Pav Bhaji we moved toward our next stop which is located a few minutes away from the station.

Stop 2- Pancham Puriwala

Amras

It looks like a small outlet but somehow our entire troop of over 20 people managed to fit in. They serve one of the best plain & masala puris with chole, pumpkin sabzi, and aloo sabzi.  The Amras we ordered were amazing.

The best part is they allow pets. They answer all your queries and also pose for your pictures apart from serving you super delicious food.

With a full tummy and content soul, we walked towards our next destination through the classic and rustic lanes of Fort.

Stop 3Yazdani Restaurant & Bakery

Brun Maska & Khari

Yazdani Bakery is a typical Irani Bakery set up with old wooden furniture, and pendulum clocks, and filled with the heady aroma of freshly baked bread. They serve great Irani tea with Brun with a huge chunk of butter and the crisp kharis. They don’t serve anything else that is mentioned on the olden-day bakery hoardings placed outside.

Our next stop was not on the itinerary but when we saw it from the outside we just couldn’t resist the temptation of going in to see it.

Stop 4- St. Thomas Cathedral

The exterior of the St. Thomas Cathedral
Interior

St. Thomas Cathedral is a 300-year-old church located in Horniman Circle.  The foundation of this church was laid in 1676 and finally started in 1718.   It is because of this very church that the station got the name ” Churchgate”.

Walk into the church, and the first thing you will feel is peace. The first thing you will notice is the architecture and the layout of the entire church. One thing you will not be able to miss is the stained glass windows. They are stunning.

Our next stop was our first halt.

Stop 5: Asiatic library

Libraries are my temples. They bring me peace and contentment.  That is exactly what the Asiatic library has always given me.

The halt at the Asiatic library was a huge learning experience about photography, posing, and what not to do during photoshoots. The conversations and laughter were enlightening.
