Healthy and quick Daliya Appe/Appam Recipe

Daliya also known as broken wheat is a great source of complex carbs, fiber, and various micronutrients. Having said that the fact still remains that not everyone likes the taste or texture of daliya. Hence I decided to try out something different with daliya.

Appe or Appam are traditionally made from rice and dal and served at breakfast or as an evening snack. They are even sold as street food.

What better way to consume daliya than in the form of Appam.

Daliya Appe

Serves:5-6

Ingredients:

Daliya- 2 cups

Udad dal- 1 cup

Methi seeds- 1 tsp

Salt- 2 tsp

Baking soda- a pinch

Oil- 2-3 tbsp

Procedure:

  • Wash and soak Udad dal with methi and daliya separately for 6-8 hrs in minimal water.
  • Grind the ingredients separately without adding extra water.
  • Mix the 2 batters properly and the consistency should be thick.
  • Add the ginger-garlic-green chilli paste, salt, chopped onions, coriander, and baking soda to the batter. Leave it for a few minutes.
  • Heat the cast iron or nonstick appe/ paniyaram pan, brush oil to the pan.
  • Pour the batter into each separate mould up to the brim. Cover with a lid and let it cook.
  • Within a few minutes, the sides are done. Using a knife or spoon turn it upside down and let it cook.
