Jowar Upma – A twist to the traditional

Jowar / jawar/sorghum is a gluten-free millet. It is high in fiber and has a good amount of protein, and nutrients like Vitamin B’s, magnesium, zinc, copper, etc.

Sorghum has been an integral part of my eating routine. I often use Jowar Flour to make bhakri but I recently came across jowar Rava by Inner Being and I knew I had to give it a try. So I made the classic Upma using Jowar Rava.

Jowar Upma

Ingredients:

Jowar Rava-1 cup, roasted

Onion- 1, chopped finely

Tomato-1, chopped

Carrots-1/2 cup, chopped finely

Green peas-1/2 cup boiled

Green chillies-2, sliced

Mustard seeds-1 tsp

Methi seeds-1/2 Tsp

Urad dal-1 tbsp

Oil-1 tsp

Ginger-1 tsp, grated

Salt- as per taste

Water- 3-4 cups

Chopped coriander and grated coconut for garnish

Lemon-1/2

Procedure:
  • Heat oil in a wok. Add the mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add the green chilies, methi seeds, urad dal, and lastly grated ginger.
  • Saute it slightly for a few minutes.
  • Add in onion and saute it till it turns light pink and soft.
  • Add in the carrot and saute it for a few minutes. Then add in the green peas.
  • Boil water in another vessel.
  • Finally, add the tomatoes and roasted Jowar Rava into the wok.
  • Pour in the boiling water and let it cook till done. Takes about 10-15 mins.
  • Serve it warm.
  • Garnish it with coriander, coconut, and a piece of lemon.

Jowar upma is great at breakfast, brunch, and even as an evening snack.

Do try it out and let me know what innovations you tried out. Happy cooking.
