Longans and their nutritional, culinary usage

Longans also known the ” Dragon eye fruits” or Euphoria are delicious sweet tiny fruits.

Appearance:


Longans are known as the little brothers of litchee. After all, they look quite similar. The only difference is that longans have a smoother thinner yellowish-brown peel, unlike litchee.

The flesh is white translucent, and at the center, there is a blackish-brown seed ( its the seed that gives it the name dragon eye )

Taste:


They taste super sweet, unlike the litchee. In fact, they have their own distinct unusual flavor.


Availability:


Longans are native to South Asia. They are easily available at Foodhall, Nature basket, big basket. Even some local vendors in Mumbai sell these.

Nutrition:


Nutritionally speaking, they are low on calories, carbs, and have zero fat. but they are a good source of Vit. C, fiber, antioxidants. They also provide nutrients like vitamin B complexes, potassium, copper, zinc, etc.

Medicinal Uses

Longans have been used in Chinese medicine for ages (not just the fruit but the seeds too. The seeds are used to extract essential oils and other extracts)

Culinary Use:

-sorbets

– jellies

– salads

– desserts

– puddings
